Questions About Acupuncture Assisted Fertility
How does Acupuncture and TCM help treat infertility?
Acupuncture balances the flow of energy (Qi) and blood in the body. When the Qi and blood are blocked and not flowing smoothly symptoms such as endometriosis, blocked tubes, blood clots, premenstrual cramping and pain, and irregular menses can occur. When there is a deficiency of Qi and blood symptoms such as hormone balance issues, lack of ovulation, irregular or missed periods, or miscarriages can occur. Acupuncture works by directing the free flow of Qi and blood and/or building up your supply of qi and blood so that your body can support a pregnancy. It essentially helps to restore your body back to its natural balanced self. Acupuncture does not force conception, it restores the body to health so that it can get pregnant naturally.
There are almost no side effects related to acupuncture, which is why it is so commonly used. Minimal side effects may include achiness or possible bleeding/bruising at the needle site. Most people are greatly relaxed and grounded after a treatment. In fact it is not uncommon to see women taking a nap during treatment!
How often are treatments received?
Treatments range from 1-3 times a week, depending on schedules. In China acupuncture is received every day. While that is not realistic for most patients here in the west, we do encourage you to receive at least two treatments a week. It takes an absolute minimum of one treatment a week to see any improvement. Typical acupuncture clinics charge $100 - $200 for fertility acupuncture treatments making it financially impossible for the general population to afford multiple treatments. Here at Auburn Community Acupuncture we try our absolute best to provide you with affordable and quality treatment so that you can come in often enough and long enough to achieve results. All treatments are offered on a sliding scale of $15 - $45.
How long will it take?
Since menstrual cycles on come once a month or so, we have very small windows of time to see how the body is responding. There is also a learning curve for patients as they take on temperature charts (BBT), learn about cervical mucus, implement diet and lifestyle recommendations, etc. We ask that three cycles be given for both the acupuncturist and the patient to learn what their body is doing and how it responds to the treatment. After this point most women conceive within the next three months. Again, this is not a quick fix, it takes time to regain a healthy lifestyle and a healthy body. And some things are more difficult to treat than others.
What happens once I conceive?
The unfortunate reality is that some of the factors that cause infertility can also impact the body's ability to retain a pregnancy, it is especially a concern for those going through IUI/IVF. We encourage you to continue coming in for treatment through the first trimester in order to prevent this. Besides, the majority of patients like the benefits of acupuncture so much that they continue through the entire pregnancy. This being said we do treat pregnant women and hope that this encourages you rather than makes you sad, because most likely that pregnant mama was in your shoes just a few months ago. And look at what happened ;)
