Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
Autism is a developmental disorder that causes impairment in social interaction, communication and behavior. A range of disorders are associated with Autism that make up the Autism spectrum, most notably ADD/ADHD and Asperger’s. With a current incidence rate of 1 in 150 children being diagnosed with Autism the finding of effective treatments, cures, and preventative measures is essential.
At this time there are no cures for ASD and drug therapies can come with some very significant side effects. Behavioral and alternative therapies are increasingly being utilized by the Autism community.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been the main source of healthcare in Asian countries for up to 5,000 years. Since the 1970’s, when one of President Nixon’s aides received acupuncture while they were on a trip to China, TCM has spread worldwide and has made an impact in the United States as a safe and effective medical modality. The two major components of TCM are Chinese herbal formulas and acupuncture.
Autism is not longstanding in history so there is relatively no information on the treatment of Autism with TCM. There is however plenty of information on the use of TCM in psychiatry, slow development, mental retardation, and some current work by pediatric acupuncturists with ADD/ADHD.
In 2009, we conducted a successful study on the treatment of ASD’s with Traditional Chinese Medicine, you can access the study results here.
Through the use of Chinese herbal medicine, enzymes, and nutritional support, major childhood neurological and behavioral concerns can be reduced and symptoms relieved. Through my biomedical and herbal work with my own son, I have seen him go from low-mid functioning Autism to being fully mainstreamed and enjoying a happy and productive life.
There are very few acupuncturists who are treating spectrum and/or developmental disorders and our goal is to change that. Our kids desperately need help and Chinese medicine is a wonderful way to make a difference in their lives. Please don’t let distance and cost prevent you from getting help. We will work very hard to make sure your child can benefit from our services. We are dedicated to changing the world of Autism and through continuing research and study we are showing Chinese medicine to be a viable, safe, and effective treatment for our children.
